How often should fire extinguishers be tested?

If you are responsible for fire safety within your business then, to meet current fire safety regulations, you need to make sure Fire Extinguisher Servicing is carried out annually.

A straightforward visual inspection should be carried out monthly, where the location, condition, tamper seals and pressure gauges for every extinguisher should be checked and documented.

If your monthly visual inspection identifies any damage or a drop in pressure, then we advise you to book a Fire Extinguisher Service to make sure your extinguishers are in full working order in the event of a fire.

Our customer service team can advise on how often your fire extinguishers require servicing, as well as provide free reminders for when your next inspection is due.

How many fire extinguishers does my business need?

To establish how many fire extinguishers your business needs, all your sites should be surveyed by a qualified fire extinguisher engineer or fire risk assessor. Alternatively, the minimum requirements for the type and size of extinguishers you need can be found within the BS 5306 standards.

You can purchase your Class A fire extinguisher directly from our Fire Safety Store in 3L, 6L and 9L options. If you buy your fire extinguishers online though, to be legally compliant and keep your insurance valid, it’s vital that they’re installed by a professionally qualified extinguisher technician, and that appropriate certification is obtained.

Regulations also state that anyone responsible for a property or a business with five or more people must have an up-to-date Fire Risk Assessment, that’s been completed by a competent person.

A guide to Fire Extinguisher Servicing

Fire extinguishers that are not serviced on an annual basis to the standards required are no longer considered compliant. As a business owner, it’s your legal obligation to make sure you’ve got an up-to-date a Fire Risk Assessment, the right numbers and types of extinguishers in place, and an up-to-date fire logbook of your Fire Extinguisher Servicing.

Once you’ve had all your fire extinguishers inspected and serviced by us, we’ll issue you with a certificate – this will provide proof of your compliance with safety legislation and regulations, and may be requested by your property’s insurance provider.

To keep in-line with British Standards, an extended service – otherwise known as discharge testing – should also be carried out at stipulated intervals. These should check your levels for things like:

  • Water, foam, dry powder or wet chemicals – every 5 years
  • CO 2 – every 10 years

If your logbook isn’t up-to-date or you are due an annual Fire Extinguisher Service, simply call us today so we can help keep your business’ premises safe and compliant.

What types of fire extinguishers do I need?

There are several different types of fire extinguishers available, and each has a different use. Simply put, the equipment and materials in your business’ premises will determine which type(s) of fire extinguisher you need. Contact us today to arrange your Fire Risk Assessment.

What does a monthly visual inspection cover?

You should carry out – and record – monthly visual inspections to answer questions like:

  • Are your fire extinguishers in their correct location and clearly visible?
  • Are operating instructions facing outwards and legible to read?
  • Has the condition of the fire extinguisher changed through use, damage or missing parts?
  • Has the extinguisher’s pressure changed and is it within safe operating limits
  • Have tamper seals been broken or removed?

If you have a question about the Fire Extinguisher Servicing for your business, please don’t hesitate to contact us for free advice from our experienced team.
